Singer and Actress Lena Horne Died at Age 92

More sad news, just when we thought the Summer/ Winter of death was behind us and celebrities could come out of hiding. It has been reported that singer and actress Lena Horne passed away at age 92 on Sunday May 9, 2010 in NY. Her death was announced by her son-in-law, Kevin Buckley. Horne, according to the NY Times, was the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio and who went on to achieve international fame as a singer. She was one of a kind and she’ll surely be missed by the generations of stars who followed in her footsteps. RIP Lena Horne June 30, 1917-May 9, 2010.

Lena Horne died on Sunday night at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in NY. She was 92 and lived in Manhattan. Her death was announced by her son-in-law, Kevin Buckley. Horne might have become a major movie star, but she was born 50 years too early, and languished at MGM in the 1940s because of the color of her skin. [The NY Times]

    Will anyone ever hear Stormy Weather the same again? Will anyone sing it the same again?

    She could have been one of Hollywood’s legendary movie stars had racial segregation not kept her from getting the roles that were given to white actresses.

    Someone once commented that she could have tried to pass, since she was so light-skinned. She chose to fight and become a passionate supporter of civil rights.

    What a lady.
