Sam Worthington is on the cover of Details magazine, April 2010.

The Australian actor doesn’t do this kind of photo shoot all that often. Perhaps, in part, because he has only just landed on the radar of the magazines’ US readerships. Worthington has lucked into some of the, and the, highest grossing movie(s) of all time. He played the lead in James Cameron’s Thunder Smurf-homage, Avatar; he was also a pivotal role in Terminator Salvation, a movie in which he struggled to pick an accent; he is now in forthcoming movie remake, Clash of the Titans. To be clear, Clash of the Titans doesn’t want or need to be re-made. So I have a stick up my ass about that project from the get-go.

Worthington is a pretty, but decidedly mediocre, presence on-screen. I think some studio big-wig has him pegged as the next big thing, and won’t stop until we all concur. But Worthington would do well to avoid further films that expose gaps in his acting chops/ interviews that expose his inability to sell a movie.

The former bricklayer sees acting as just another job: “Get up in the morning, go to work, make the boss happy.”
In a moment of dissatisfied epiphany, Worthington auctioned off everything in his apartment: “My mates came around, saying, ‘How much for the kettle?’” he recalls. “I said ‘Five bucks. Starting at five. Do I hear six? Six? Sold, for five bucks!’”
Why he finds interviews, and reading “the stupid things I say”, excruciating: “I’m still a very boisterous young man. And I swear a bit more than I should. So I’m learning to temper it.”
His “fairy godmother,” James Cameron adds: “He’s driven to personal excellence as he defines it, not as everyone else defines it. He doesn’t make the distinctions that other actors make, as in, ‘I’ll do this one for the money, then this little indie movie for the art.’ Sam does them all for the art. That’s a very distinct difference between him and other actors.”
