Reese Witherspoon for Glamour January 2011

Reese Witherspoon covers Glamour January 2011. She has been Photoshopped beyond recognition for Glamour’s cover, and had about five years (and some of her torso) shaved away, in an issue where ageing gracefully in Hollywood seems to be the focus. She kind of looks like the love child of herself and Squints Swift, but with a far too pointy chin (they seem to have made it pointier, for some reason). I’m not really understanding the dress, though the style and the colour suit her, I guess. I’ve never been that interested in fashion and so things like this fly over my head; it kind of looks like some salmon-colour napkins held in place with a bunch of belts. I’m stealing the accessories, though. I so am. That bracelet and necklace. WANT. Let me re-phrase that… me want shiny things. Interview excerpts below from the 34-year-old mother-of-two, star of 25 movies.

Oh, also, her legs are maniacally stretched beyond her 5’2″ frame in one photo.

  • On not being scared as a woman getting older in the unforgiving Hollywood industry: ‘I think as a woman, you get older, you feel more confident in your sexuality. You’re not as intimidated by it, not as embarrassed by it. Sexuality and femininity is an accumulation of age and wisdom and comfort in your own skin. I feel better-so much better now than I ever did in my twenties. I am calmer; I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier.’
  • On battling what Jezebel.com sarcastically call ‘young whippersnappers’ for roles in romcoms: ‘There’s always going to be somebody younger or sexier. That’s why I like to say, and it’s become my famous line, ‘Funny doesn’t sag.”
  • On having a life outside of the industry: ‘I’m really, really lucky,’ she said. ‘I’ve got a lot of love in my life. I’ve got great friends. I have two great kids whom I make pancakes for every Sunday. I’m very blessed.’
  • On having more kids: ‘I would love to have more kids. Kids are the best part of my day. I don’t wake up to make movies. I wake up to hang out with my family.”
  • On making romantic comedies: “I love romantic comedies. I watch them all the time. I love all my fellow female romantic comedy queens, like Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner and Katie Heigl. I also think that the questions romantic comedies ask about men and women are universal.’
