Penelope Cruz covers the June 2011 issue of British GQ. This is in pretty stark contrast to the June American Vogue cover, for which she’s barely airbrushed at all. In the latter cover, you can see her freckles and every detail of her face; beautiful details that are sorely lacking above. I’m not really sure what’s going on with her hair/ wig, her dislocated neck, or the sallow glow they’ve given her skin. However, she does give an interesting interview and unlike her peers seems capable of saying something fresh in each interview. Cruz recalls working with Johnny Depp in 2001. And she explains why she won’t work with a**holes.
- On being offered the Pirates Of The Caribbean role by director Rob Marshall, with whom she previously worked on 2009′s Nine: ‘Rob and I were eating together and he turned to me and said, ‘I have this question to ask you but I don’t know if I’m brave enough to ask as you may say No’… ‘Well Rob, you have to ask me,’ I said. And he turned and asked, ‘Would you like to do Pirates with me and Johnny?’ I heard this and screamed. A very good scream. I really love Rob and have longed to work with him again. I want to kiss his feet.’
- On Johnny Depp, with whom she worked on 2001′s Blow: ‘Johnny is a great friend, so genuine and unique. My memories of Blow. Wow that was such an extreme period. It was a wild set, very rock ‘n’ roll. I had missed working with him.’
- On avoiding a**holes, even if she really wants a role: ‘When I started, when I was 16 or 17, I never even considered not doing a project. I just wanted to work. I knew who some of those I would work with would be pleasant, and others would be these huge a**holes… But now, if there’s one thing I can afford to do, having worked so hard for all of these years, it’s that if I go into a meeting with someone that is offering me a movie and I can clearly see they are going to be an a**hole, I will not do the movie. No matter what it is.’
