A Manhattan tattoo parlour, East Side Ink, has been fined after letting singer, Rihanna, illegally tattoo several of its artists.
While celebrities in LA can willfully get away with crimes so severe as murder and merrily walk away with little more than a slap on the wrist, NYC don’t plat dat and should you doodle on people without a proper license, you’re going to get the book and a hefty fine thrown square at you.
The Alien Princess, 21, was spotted in the parlour, sitting in the place of the tattoo artist, in July 2009. She was photographed during the entire incident, by the waiting paparazzi. The singer was not attempting to hide the fact that she was inking several of the shop’s employees, during a visit with her longtime friend, tattoo artist, BangBang.
The shop should have known better, so they are bang-to-rights for this fine. It’s a pathetic fine, but I guess it’s in the spirit of the law. Officials said the fine amount could range from $200-$2000.
According to a rep for the NYC Health Department, a citation has been issued to East Side Ink for allowing an unlicensed tattoo artist to work there. “Yes, a violation was issued to East Side Ink after an inspector found the parlor operating with an unlicensed tattoo artist on the site,” the rep tells MTV News about the violation. “All Health Code violations can range in fines between $200 and $2,000.”
But the statement clarified that the fine was not actually for the Rihanna incident. “Rihanna was not found at the parlor when the Health Department inspector followed up,” the statement continues. “The Health Department received a call about Rihanna, sent out an inspector, Rihanna was not at the site, the inspector conducted an inspection of the parlor and found an unlicensed tattoo artist operating on the premises — the Health Department issued a violation to the parlor for this unlicensed tattoo artist.”
