Previously, Halle Berry tried to hide from paparazzi in the same France that took a year to file charges against the magazine that published n*des of British royalty. With her plan shot all to hell, Berry settled for lobbying for better laws in her native California. Not least because, as she’s already explained at one of these committees, her kid is too terrified to go to school because she thinks the paps are ‘trying to kill her.’ If it’s possible to belabour that point (and I don’t think it is), Berry elucidates in another anecdote. When she was in the thick of the custody trial, paparazzi took to questioning her kid since Berry wouldn’t respond. ‘How do you feel, Nahla? You may not see your father again. How do you feel about that?’ they’d hiss. The little girl would ask her mother, ‘Why did they say that to me, mommy? What does that mean? Who are these men and why are they following us?’ Berry adds, ‘They say curse words and call me names, all trying to provoke some sort of response to sell a photograph.’ This is the same paparazzi who called Suri Cruise a ‘bitch’ for ignoring them and, the last time Jennifer Garner was pregnant and Ben Affleck wouldn’t give up the baby’s name, the paps started asking his toddlers ‘What is your little brother or sister’s name,’ instead–in response to which, obviously, Affleck got rather heated.
