Miss California U.S.A. 2009, Carrie Prejean, booed for opposing gay marriage
Let me preface this by saying that, no, I did not watch last night’s 2009 Miss U.S.A. pageant, nor do I give a poop about any “contest” where people are judged on how well they whistle the tune of ‘The Sound of Music’ or how well they fill out a bikini. I do, by contrast, care deeply about misjudged political statements that have no place being aired in a public forum.
At the Miss America (Miss U.S.A.) pageant 2009, Carrie Prejean (Miss California) got her toned butt booed for expressing her opinion.
Now, her particular opinion is one with which I disagree – that gay people should not marry – however, I will defend anyone’s right to free speech. (Whether or not they can tie their own shoe laces).
Prejean took my breath away, expressing such a flabbergasting stance so openly, in response to openly gay Perez Hilton’s question about Vermont’s recent legalization of same-sex marriage.
For me, her stance is not the issue here. Nor is anyone else’s stance on gay marriage, and it’s subjective rights and wrongs.
The issue is that Miss California came across like a mangle efftard and did not take the time to think, and at least get an entire point across. If she had managed to refer to gay marriage in an articulate manner and call heterosexual marriage ANYTHING other than “opposite marriage” (??!?!??) she would have done herself a humongous favour and not spent the whole of today being made fun of and cussed out in the popular media.
Screw it, I’m waffling, but this is really hard to explain. Just watch the videos and feel free to chime in.
Paris Hilton’s video blog cussing out Carrie Prejean (Miss California 2009)

The drama is NOT over!!!
I’m going to keep my eye on this, this is such a school yard way to discuss civil rights.
Great post Amy!!! xoxo
This was really hard to explain, due to all the people it would offend, but it had to be said.
Thanks for your support honey!!!
I am spitting with anger at this stupid twit – this is my fifth time trying to be articulate while I am taking a break from work, and every comment has been lost because I am trying to appear calm cool collected.
We did not watch it, I just woke up this morning with Tomas relaying the news while I tried to open my eyes.
I just saw the picture of Miss Cali and Perez’s Hilton’s face – she might as well have said “I do not believe in violence”, and then stepped off of the stage and slugged him.
She did the most piss poor job of straddling the fence that I have ever seen. Silly bitch pretends to be tolerant, but is going to get her real feelings in that sentence. Thank god most of us are not single digit I.Q.’s and can smell hypocrisy a mile away.
Can anyone help me? I believe in happiness and freedom and healthy, articulate debate…..and tolerance.
However, I am intolerant of the the folks that are intolerant.
I can understand using an awards show to throw out ones political views, it gets met with unease – remember Michael Moore accepting his Academy award and the speaking out against George Bush? Or Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon Stating their political views on the horrors that were going on in other countries.
But to use an awards platform to inarticulate one’s views on gay and lesbian couplings – marriage?
WHO ARE THEY HURTING??
Nobody. Gay people are the victims of the Orange County Beauty Queens (funny they are called that, huh?) and their fringe right wing Republican ilk.
I have to go back to work, but dammit, I cannot believe that this, plus a woman’s right to choose, are still insane, hot button topics over here.
I thought we were a little more evolved at this point.
Hi Kelly, I thought this may be up your alley… (Thank you for persisting.)
I cannot believe that in essence I agree with Perez. He actually says he is not bothered that she is a homophobe, her horrid answer is what got his goat. She missed the point of the question and provoked the reaction she got today. In a word she is a twit.
We will never evolve beyond this, sad but true.
This is the fifth comment I have written – either I am red-blind with rage, or something is funky with my computer.
maybe what I wrote about Miss Cali twit was too harsh.
I am too angry to be articulate right now.
Hi, sorry something went wrong, but I did recover your comment (above).
Good for her. I’m glad she spoke what is right. It’s about time someone did! And they are worried about alienating millions of gay families?? What about alienating us “normal” Americans? Somehow the majority has become the minority. This is messed up!
Hi Duffy, welcome to the site and thank you for commenting.
I agree that at least she was honest about her views. She has every right to do so!
*SIGH* thisi s far from over and we all know that media outlets are gonna latch on to this and beat the story into the ground (as if they have’t alresd) that is until octomom and/or chris brown do something else…hmm…now THAT would be a couple…lol Chris Brown and Octomom! you heard it from me first! hehehe
on a more serious note, I’m with you, she’s entitles to her opinion and all, but if you’re going to go so far as to say something politicla like that, then you better make it sound like you know what you’re talking about. No wonder she didn’t win…besides the fac that she looked veery plastic, but then she is from California…lol
This’ll lase all week… I always try not to be tacky and milk stories, but if something is newsworthy I look retarded for not covering it
lol somethings just can’t be helped mentioning, though, and the vocal poop coming from thischick has to brought up…lol
vocal poop?
She spoke from the heart. Who cares if you disagree? Disagreeing with what she said does not make her comment “vocal poop.” If anyone came out with “vocal poop,” then it was Hilton for asking a question which was highly inappropriate and too cerebral for this type of schlock program. But then again… Hilton’s pretty much a schlockmeister.
Here is where you may stop loving me (assuming you actually do hahaha).
Let me preface by saying, I’m all for equal rights and gay marriage and was pissed when Prop 8 was passed. That being said, Carrie answered the question honestly. That, I respect. Granted, she could’ve answered it a little more…less bluntly?
Here’s what pisses me off. Not that she can’t articulate well (opposite marriage? Isn’t that divorce?) or make sense (clearly there’s NO choice to have same sex or heterosexual marriages since only 4 states allow it), but that Perez offered alternate answers that DIDN’T answer the question. He pretty much said an acceptable answer would’ve been one that beat around the bush and avoided the question. THAT’S what sets me off.
How could I think you were anything less than awesome. I’m so stoked to have you as a (very welcome) and very verbose community member. Pull up a chair, make yourself at home.
Thank you for reflecting a lot of my own point – I support everyone’s right to free speech. I do not support people failing in their respective public speaking roles (especially when she should have been trained to take a curve ball). Her ability to show potential as even a mediocre Miss USA is fail. That is my only problem with her.
Go Miss California – you and everyone else has a right to an opinion w/o the fear of being back-lashed.
Agreed, as I mention above kudos to her for that at least.
Perez “Hitler” Hilton clearly had a political agenda with this question. These girls are put into the spot light in front of millions of viewers. Of course they cant beat around the bush or give an answer that will be viewed as neither this way or that, there is to much pressure to put out that kind of speech on whim.
Hilton wanted her to say (well I just believe people should have the right to choose w/e they want to marry), it backfired and now hes throwing a hissy fit. That is unacceptable as a judge (who the hell brought him to judge anyway), he should be banned and never allowed to be apart of such a thing again.
I mean how narrowminded can you be? He calls her a dumb bitch? At least she says she thinks its great we live in a country where we can vote on what we believe. She just put her perspective out there and got bashed for it.
Hitler Hilton along with some of his fascist regime handmen on here Kelly) are obviously gonna get their panties in a bunch. But so what? Most people dont believe in same sex marriage. We’re the majority. So show your book burning fascist mouth.
NotABookBurner – welcome to the site and thank you for commenting.
I thought that considering Perez was supposed to be a judge, it would have been more fitting to show a little tact himself. Who knows why he took the time to blog that. What did it achieve???
P.S. You should know that Kelly is a veteran community member and has a free pass to say whatever she will.
Hi NotABookBurner –
I am confused, it is okay for Miss California to air her views, but not okay for Perez Hilton or myself to do so?
As I asked, help me out here. Oddly enough, I have never read Perez Hilton’s blog, I just saw his face on the still of the video.
Why is it that the people who used to be in the majority are now the minority, and call anyone with a different opinion ‘fascists?”
It smells like fear to me, really, and I am not trying to ignite a fight here – let ME try to be a little more articulate.
Miss Cali was proud of a country with free speech, and seems to be at odds with her own beliefs and what democracy is about.
Oddly, she comes off as a desperate people pleaser, and having been there myself, all it does is get one bashed from every side.
Miss Cali is not a newbie to beauty pageants – my great aunt was Miss Washington, and she had been groomed and coached since she was a child. All of the women are prepped, so Miss Cali is not a victim of Perez’s question – it just so happens that it was not the stock pageant question – it was a question that fit the times we are in.
If she was unprepared for that, then I guess we blame her handlers for being stuck in 1959.
The person who wrote this article is 100% correct. A) No. The way she answered the question was, really hard to watch. And no, I don’t think she should have called it “opposite marriage” but she got her point across.
Perez is only hurting himself by calling her the b word and ranting about it like a ten year old. “She didn’t say what I wanted her to say!” whaaa
It’s not like she wants to rally the troops and sequester ever gay person in the world.
The reaction to this is unwarranted and unnecessary.
He should have prepared himself to hear the answer before he asked it. We all do not hail Perez Hilton.
I mean, wouldn’t you rather have someone tell you the truth about how they feel and have open honest discussions? Or would you rather have the person lie to your face “sure I want gay marriage” and as soon as they go to the voting booth vote against gay marriage?
Not everyone is impossible to talk to.
Hi Lauren, welcome to my site and thank you so much for taking the time to give your opinion.
Miss California did express the essence of what she meant, that is a very good way of putting it.
I agree that Perez made his point and agenda clear by asking the question in the first place, the vlog was overkill. And, yes, he should have braced himself for a wider plethora of answers than just the one he wanted to hear.
still not getting why being gay is an issue, the only point it seems to any of this discussion is to advertise ones afflictions purely for the attention. being gay isnt like being black, no one knows what u do in your bedroom until you shove it in their face, so the simple solution would be to stop forcing me to deal with your sexual decisions, dont care what u do in the bedroom or who. gays dont need their own rights, what they need is to stop pushing their agenda onto the front page. perez is the biggest sell out of them all, he was relevant when he was a fat pink haired queer, now hes all cleaned up, lipo’d and styled and he thinks he matters… only to those pulling your strings for their own benefit my friend….
Welcome to the site and thank you for commenting ken b.
You too are entitled to your opinion, though it seems to conflict with the above consensus. We appreciate your honesty.
i guess i jus am still at a loss as to why there is even discussion about being gay and the specials rights that those that are gay somehow deserve. unless a person tells me they are gay i simply cannot discriminate against them for it, so whats the problem? if i was to suddenly declare myself a beastiphile would i somehow become eligible for special rights over and above everyones elses simply because of my sexual orientation, i think not. i know its a simplistic view however kinda accurate really, now that hes cleaned up and socially acceptable (sell out?) who could ever tell that perez is gay and if he would stop ramming gay down the throats of everyone and making it seem that if your not gay you must be against those that are he would probably have a discrimination free life!
how is it that there is even a discussion about the ‘quality’ of her answer? articulation? wtf? just give a stock answer to the normal questions, ‘i would like there to be world peace blah blah blah’… look pretty and show us your tits honey! thats what we tune in to a pagent for, T&A! this discussion only serves as a forum for political correctness, which flys in the face of parading women around in frekin bathing suites! how am i the only one that sees the horrid irony in being let down or even offended by a beauty contestants answer to a blatant trap of a question?! next lets send rosie into chip and dales to find the solution to the somalli pirate issue and everyone get pissed off at the responses!!! ‘uh, pirates, so you want me to dress up like a pirate? that’ll be extra…’
I guess I watched a different video. If that was booing, it sounded pretty tame. Secondly, the question was, “Do you think that other states should follow suit? Why or why not?” It had nothing to do with states’ rights or federal jurisdiction. Perez’s answer would have been artful dodging. She answered the question he asked, and she took what could be viewed as an unpopular stance. Personally, I believe that gay people should have the right to be as miserable as the rest of us, but since I’m not gay, I really have no stake in the matter. Same thing with abortion. I’m a man. I can’t have one. Therefore, my view–although I have a right to one–is limited. The world might be a little better if people started paying closer attention to the things that they have a stake in, and less time worrying about things that affect them not one iota.
Hi Matt – thank you for leaving a comment.
I’d thought the same thing but the clip above was picked because it was a nice quality – rather than for the booing.
The comment you make about whether people have any place getting into quite such a lengthy debate about issues that may not effect them is a very interesting one. Thanks for putting it like that, it made me think.
I’ll let the community chime in and respond to that if they so wish…
