This was bound to happen after the incest allegations made by Mackenzie Phillips on Oprah on the Wednesday episode.
Amongst the claims made on the show, which made me feel ill to read through, Phillips says that people need to know the face of adult consensual incest and that’s very much what happened between her and her father, musician John Phillips of the ’60s band the Mamas and the Papas.
Today Michelle Phillips, above, the ex-wife of the late John Phillips, says her stepdaughter Mackenzie, inset, is lying about ever having an incestuous affair with her father.
“John was a bad parent, and a drug addict. But [expletive deleted] his daughter? If she thinks it’s true, why isn’t she with a good psychiatrist on a couch? I think it’s unconscionable that Oprah would let her do her show. I have every reason to believe it’s untrue. Oprah should be more judicious about who she has on her show.”
Michelle added: “Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She’s had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years. She was arrested for heroin and coke just recently. She did ‘Celebrity Rehab’ and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed.” Michelle said it’s particularly ironic since her own daughter, Chynna, of Wilson Phillips fame, Mackenzie’s half sister, is releasing a new album this week.

It figures that one of the wives would call Mackenzie Phillips a liar – it probably makes Michelle Phillips so ill to think about it that she takes the more emotionally easy road and points her finger at the victim, who is, conveniently, her step-daughter. I wonder if Chynna made the same accusations, would Michelle call Chynna a liar?
I am not hearing Mackenzie Phillips biological mother, Susan Adams, calling her a liar.
Mackenzie’s story rings true, especially as she admits to it becoming consensual – if she were just trying to get attention, I believe she would not admit the hardest part of the whole tragic incident.
It is terribly hard to get professional help with these kinds of issues – there is so much shame involved. Numbing out with drugs is much more preferable in the short run, and yes, it can turn into a very long short run.
I find it very interesting that Michelle is slamming Mackenzie with her drug use, when it is known that Michelle Phillips was as heavy a user as her ex-husband. Glass houses, Michelle. Glass houses.
Also, from what I gather, Chynna PHillips was told 10 years ago and believes her half sister. Doesn’t seem to be a jealousy issue going on here. More like an ex-wife in serious denial. Just my opinion.
And I believe, one of the Phillips daughters was emancipated from her parents at age 14. Bijou Phillips. Gee, wonder what happened to her when she was alone with Papa John?
All in all, John Phillips and his many wives and children put a capital “D” in dysfunctional. I feel bad for all of them, and I believe Mackenzie Phillips. I think it took a lot of guts to finally spit it out. I don’t think I could do it. Even in these somewhat cheap celebrity times, she could have come up with something a little less horrifying if she was just trying to “get attention”.
One last thing – I did not even know Chynna Phillips was coming out with an album. It seems as if Michelle Phillips is using Mackenzie’s tragedy to promote her biological daughters album, and get the chance to slam her stepdaughter, all in one nice tight judgmental little statement. Clever.
Again, just my opinion.
I had no idea that half of that happened!! It will be interesting to see whether her biological mother or any siblings come forward and what they have to say. In any case, this is a big bundle of denials and contradictions that I think Ms Mackenzie P. is hoping only her book will set straight
