Paula Deen apparently used to sell buttery DIABEETUS in every store in America. But it turns out that since it became illegal to own Black people as chattel they’ve somehow acquired their own money and are spending it in those same stores. So, conflicted, most of her business partners have dropped Deen in the past week. Following at least three televised apologies including more than one in which she insisted her history of institutionalised racism and creating a hostile work environment—which she minimised by lying about ‘saying the N-word once 30 years ago’—is ‘okay’ because sometimes brown people call each other words they actually understand the gravity of. She’s been fired outright by Food Network, Smithfield, the Caesars casino company, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Novo Nordisk DIABEETUS medication, and Target. While she’s also ‘on pause’ with QVC because apparently racists like Tupperware. By contrast, I guess we know how the Klan is spending its summer because some of her restaurants have queues out the door, her book ‘Paula Deen’s New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up’ is #1 on the Amazon bestseller list, AND the Paula Deen Cruise is so popular it’s added an extra date to accommodate fans showing their support.
UPDATE: Sears Holdings, owner of Sears and Kmart stores, also jumped ship offering the following statement to TMZ.com ‘After careful consideration of all available information, we have made the decision to phase out all products tied to [Paula Deen's] brand. We will continue to evaluate the situation.’
UPDATE: TMZ Live says the same publisher who saw a 1000% rise in sales on Amazon, reaching #1 on the bestseller list, has dropped Deen’s book.
