Welcome to the site and thanks for the comment, Charles. You have to listen to the backing track. They are the same, but for one or two rearranged notes. The feel of Battlefield is more on par with Halo, sure. It’s the whole hip hop balled thing.

After listening to both tracks, they really don’t sound that much alike to me. A bit similar, yes, but not so much to have caused a lot of controversy, In fact, I think that another “Idol” alum, Jordin Spark’s song, “Battlefield” is even more similar. Evertime I hear it, I think of “Halo”, and have wondered if they were written and/or produced by the same person. By the way, I really like all three songs.

I read the full article, and I’d also like to point out that Kelly said she fought her label NOT to release it out of respect for Beyonce.

She has a potential huge hit on her hands with this one, and writing credits, yet she was willing to give it up out of respect for Beyonce, is admirable, even though hers was written first. I can’t blame her for being upset with Tedder, he was the one who threw her reputation under the bus. If Kelly sat back and said nothing, she would’ve possibly been accused of copying Beyonce, when that wasn’t the case.

I love how she’s ballsy and straightforward in interviews. And I doubt that she was quoted verbatim. Knowing CBC, they may have tweaked what she said to make it look like she’s talking shit and without class.

Anyway, I’d like to point out that Kelly CO-WROTE this song with Ryan Tedder and in fact, an insider at RCA revealed that she has 40% songwriting credits while Ryan only has %30. This goes to show that she’s not only an amazing songwriter, she’s all one of the best songwriters of our time. I think she’s the only popstar nowadays who writes her own material (well, Lady Gaga, of course lol) that’s why her songs have substance. I don’t dispute the quote, I just think she should know better than to blab it all out. I think this is one of those times that keeping it real goes quite wrong. But we’ll see.

I am well aware (as will many regular readers be) that the full quote has more detail. For reasons of space and relevance, I rarely use full quotes. In this instance it was rather unnecessary to have the quote in the form above. Many other news sites cut out far more than I did, if they quoted the singer at all. You do make an interesting point about the release dates. If her album had come out on time, I would have been posing about this story in reverse.

The full quote is slightly more in-depth – she was asked outright why the two songs sound similar, and replied: “Ryan and I met each other at the record label, before he was working with anyone else. He’s from Oklahoma, I’m from Texas; we got along really well and had some of the same influences. We wrote about six songs together, four or five of them made the album. It was all fine and dandy. I’d never heard of a song called Halo. Her album came out when my album was already being printed. No-one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’ In the end, they’re releasing it without my consent. It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It’s kind of a s**tty situation, but.… You know, you learn.”

The story is that Already Gone was being mixed and Beyonce’s father and A&R guy heard it and asked for a ‘hit like it’ – Tedder then remixed and rewrote a song that Leona Lewis had rejected and sold Beyonce a cut of the publishing rights. The irony is that her album was due last October but was delayed because of Britney and Beyonce, and it was her massive Max Martin hit that inspired copycats.

It’s a shame as both are pretty good songs. She is pointing out something that otherwise stood a chance of not being noticed. Making the point in a more tasteful manner would have stood her better.

Producers and engineers can hide from the public while the performer acts as the lightning rod for public opinion. This cuts both ways…but she should’ve been cool and reserved comment for her label’s PR group. Now I doubt any non-indie producer will touch her.
