By ‘you’, I mean ‘me’. And by ‘better’, I mean ‘I’d kick a child in the shins, to have Iman’s amazing skin for one day’. Oh, and she’s 55. SUCK ON THAT. Iman has a photo spread with the December 2010 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the issue for which Katy Perry is on the cover. I was initially distracted by her being flawless, and neglected to ask myself ‘Why?’ As in, why does she require a spread in Harper’s Bazaar? I then happened upon a Jezebel article about Iman on Bravo, for a new season of The Fashion Show (a Project Runway rip-off, where the designers are split into two teams/ fashion ‘houses’, and have to create ‘the ultimate collection’). She’s a replacement for Kelly Rowland, whose light bill needs paying a little more urgently than Iman’s. I guess that explains the coverage. Below is a second photo and some excerpts from her interview with Simon Doonan. Her comment about how if anyone threw a cell at her ‘it would come right back at them like a boomerang’, made me develop an instant girl-crush. Same with how husband David Bowie doesn’t argue with her because ‘he is English.’ Apparently, we don’t do that. It interrupts the tea-drinking.
- On how many times a day she Googles herself: ‘Every five minutes. I simply can’t take my eyes off myself. Kidding! I would rather Google other people than Google myself.’
- On whether she’s ever thrown a cell at anyone: ‘No! And if anyone threw one at me, it would come right back at them like a boomerang. If I feel frustrated in a situation, I take a deep breath and walk away.’
- On whether she and husband-of-18-years, David Bowie, argue: ‘David doesn’t fight. He is English, so he just stays quiet. I’m the screamer. Then he always makes me laugh. It’s like cabaret. I keep him entertained too. I still fancy him after all these years.’
- On who takes longer to get ready: ‘David takes five minutes. Me? I don’t do anything by myself. I have a whole crew to get me ready every day.’
- On the worst thing about being a parent: ‘The early mornings. There is soccer and music class at 7:30 A.M. Remember, I am 55. I can only take so much.’
- On enjoying cooking: ‘I vowed to myself when I got married that I would cook every night. I find it very therapeutic.’
- On whether she’s a true New Yorker or a Somali girl: ‘Absolutely a New Yorker. I can tell you exactly when I switched. We moved downtown when Lexi was born. When 9/11 happened, 12 of our neighborhood firemen were killed. I looked around at the country that had adopted me and I became an American. ‘
- On whether she had ever done acid, specifically: ‘No, but I have dropped a lot of other things. I did the whole Studio 54 thing. My saving grace was that I always knew when to leave the party.’
- On her idol: ‘My father. He taught me how to be a parent and gave me a positive connection with men because he is a gentleman. And that is what attracted me to David. He is a gentle soul.’
