Ewan McGregor, the notoriously un-media friendly British Actor, reportedly hit the roof after finding out that there was a cybersquatter on Twitter who was giving totally fake updates about his life. The star even threatened to take legal action to forcibly take the site down.
“Someone is just making it up,” said the star’s rep, after nearly 20,000 fans spent the last few months following the Scottish actor’s every movement, like “[Ewan] is about to enjoy some banana pancakes” and “has just worked with Uma Thurman for Unicef.”
It seems the imposter managed to get away with it for so long by dutifully logging Ewan’s actual activities into his Twitter feed, and also linking to his (also fake) MySpace account. There, “Ewan” makes some choice pronouncements, the most ironic being: “I am very particular about my children being photographed or seen on television. I believe that just because I am famous that does not mean you may invade my privacy.”
You know what, I totally read about this on Monday, in the UK papers on my way home from work, but I forgot about it as there must have been some more newsy stuff to go up on here. This story sounds fair enough to me though. I was following the Fake Ewan on Twitter and then got all pissed when I found he was a complete liar and so I unfollowed him. Fraud!
UPDATE – I just checked the link and it looks like Real Ewan got his way – the page has been removed.

Twitter seriously needs to increase security. Celebs are faked or hacked. They’re really not on top of their game. I can only fathom how annoying a poser would be. Gross!
It is so easy to set up a fake a page. More are fakes than not and it’s so irritating to follow people and find out they are fake later.
It is the worst finding out you’re following fakes. I heard Tina Fey is fake. It’s usually reported when the page is fake though.

Twitter sounds like it’s doing what Myspace used to be and have little ot no security. no wonder I haven’t joined yet…though I’ll probably cave in sooner rather than later.
You’re not missing too much… but you should at least check there is not a fake MM on there!
i wonder…i know i’m getting followed by my friends, but i think that has more to do with them just randomly typing in my e-mail address…at least i ghope so
