Emma Stone Cried When Followed By Paparazzi

Emma Stone covers New York Magazine for which she’s still giving us Olsen Eyes because that’s her shtick. It’s like Zooey Deschanel and the bangs. This one facial expression in every shoot. It’s never going to go away. It’s cute, sure. It’s also Try. I don’t like Try. Promoting The Amazing Try-Man, which had its London premiere yesterday, Stone recalls crying in front of a paparazzo who declared he’d stake out her home indefinitely although the guy soon bored of her.

On whether fame is like she imagined when persuading her parents by PowerPoint to let her move to Hollywood at age 15: ‘I’m just trying really hard not to imagine what will happen. Because the way you picture things are never the way they turn out, really, ever.’
On how roles like The Help changed her life: ‘It’s been a crazy year… It’s probably actually been the craziest year of my life.’
On dating and living with co-star Andrew Garfield: ‘Not too shabby, eh?’
On why she won’t give specifics: ‘I’d tell you everything if that thing wasn’t here,’ she says apologetically, gesturing at the tape recorder. ‘It’s just not necessarily stuff I want the whole world to read and have an opportunity to comment on. I’m sorry, I hate to be that actress who says: ‘I don’t talk about my personal life,’ eeesh. I was such a fan as a kid, and there were so many people I wanted to know about. I understand it, I just can’t bring myself to do it. I freak out having a Facebook.’
On how the paparazzi madness began: A pair of movie stars dating is not something tabloids can just ignore. One morning, an editor at Us Weekly saw her and Garfield at brunch and alerted photographers, who swarmed the place and followed them to their apartment, where the paparazzi set up camp and refused to budge for over a month. ‘One guy told me, ‘This is my job. I’m going to be here every day now.’ I cried in front of this guy. When you hear this at eight o’clock in the morning, you’re like, Oh my God, my life as I know it is gone.’
…but then is stopped: They were relieved when the swarm suddenly moved on. Stone suggests that her and Garfield’s relatively sedate activities, shopping in the West Village, going to see Woody Allen at the Carlyle, bored them. ‘I think Lea Michele moved to New York or something,’ Stone laughs. ‘Someone more exciting.’
…although it’s still insidious: ‘Like the people next to you taking sneaky camera-phone pictures, and you’re like: Okay, this is a thing now.’
On Jim Carrey’s weird video about her: ‘I was so flattered I can’t even tell you. Honest! I’ve always had like weird connections with men in their forties and fifties. I mean, not in a creepy way. I’ve never been attracted to them. But I have always become, like, pals with guys in that age group.’
On her looks: ‘The pretty thing… It was never a value to me growing up. I always thought I was like the goofy, wonky one.’
On her fame lately: ‘It’s weird. I don’t actually recognize the person that’s out there. It’s like there’s this outside person, and there’s me.’
