X Factor took a bet on the mental health of two former Disney stars and lost in the ratings because both stayed on their meds and did their jobs. With varying degrees of success, of course, but the producers openly bet that one or both of Britney Spears and Demi Lovato would suffer some sort of relapse or breakdown that would be good for ratings. But ratings tanked and both girls are probably going to be replaced next season. At least Lovato can admit that she probably made a mistake doing the show at all. Back in May 2012, Lovato told a British magazine: ‘I need to be secure in my body before I go back in front of the camera. Anyone in recovery from an eating disorder would find that triggering, and I’m not ready.’ And then she forgot about all that a month or two later when she signed on to X Factor for seven-figures. Nearly a year later, and she admits she returned to work too soon after getting out of treatment. She tells the Spring 2013 issue of Cosmo on Campus: ‘I don’t think I was ready when I started on The X Factor. In an ideal situation I would have maybe waited a year or more… I dived into work really quickly, and maybe that wasn’t the best idea at the time, but the place I am in today is so much better than I could have ever imagined, so I’m really glad.’ She continues: ‘I have spent the last year focusing on myself and it’s been incredible. More has come out of the past year than in my entire career so far and I truly believe it was because I was taking care of myself.’
