Chris Brown was sentenced, finally, for his assault of Rihanna back in February.
The singer, now 20-years-old, does not appear to have learnt any lessons, despite his video apology which claimed he was remorseful. I’m not buying any apology of his, nor will I back down on the stance that saying sorry and sobbing crocodile tears does not change the fact that he is a certified woman beater. Now, that is not to say he cannot go on to improve and strengthen his character. However, his actions, including mocking TMZ in a recent video I saw (as a dig to them publishing the picture of what he did to Rihanna’s face) kind of makes me feel like he is not on the road to help that he should be.
TMZ have given us all a delightful refresher course in an official blow-by-blow (ahem), as even with the worst of crimes, people have a selective memory. They remind us that he hit, choked and bit Rihanna during the attack. Even given the severity of the crime, this little bish got off super easy. So easy in fact, that I would argue the court risks sending a further dangerous message about how seriously (or not) it takes domestic violence cases.
The sentence for Beat Down Brown was as follows, broadly speaking; Chris Brown can’t talk to Rihanna for five years, he will spend the next six months cleaning up trash, he will do hard labour and be made to take domestic violence classes. No jail time. No real punishment. A celebrity-justice-flavour slap on the wrist. Nice.
