Sarah Murdoch, daughter-in-law of Rupert Murdoch and host of Australia’s Next Top Model, has explained how she screwed up the live show during which the winner was announced. You may remember yesterday’s post during which it was established that live television is TEH SUCK when the host has to be comforted by the people she shafted. Murdoch initially spoke out to clarify that AusNTM’s live fail was not a publicity stunt. As, let’s face it, the awkward minute during which the host was comforted by the teenage contestants and unable to do more than apologise was great publicity for this awfully thrown together show.
[Of announcing the wrong winner and taking over a minute to correct her mistake, Murdoch says] ‘The last thing that had been communicated to me through my earpiece was Kelsey 1, Amanda 2. And we had this great idea that we wouldn’t use a card, that we would have it all communicated to me through an earpiece, so that I too in that moment would find out who the winner was. And I thought it will be great. So having heard the last thing was Kelsey 1, Amanda 2, I went into the read the winner of Australia’s Next Top Model is… nothing. Nothing. So all I knew was the last thing was Kelsey 1, Amanda 2. The point was, it was going to be communicated through my ear and it didn’t come at that moment. So I went with what I had been told just before that segment. It is a genuine miscommunication. As far as I knew it was the right call.‘ [Gawker]
So far as she knew, it was a call that ruined an 18-year-old’s moment to shine. Way to go. Gawker adds that Harper’s Bazaar Australia is running two November 2010 covers; one of winner Amanda Ware, 18, and one of runner-up Kelsey Martinovich, 19. Subscribers will receive Ware’s cover, since she’s technically the one who won, while newsstand shoppers can choose between the two.
