Cameron Diaz gives a new interview with Stylist magazine, in the UK (where she’s currently promoting Knight and Day while attached to Tom Cruise’s hip). For the interview, she discusses society’s expectations about relationships and marriage. Specifically, she opines that it’s kind of a stupid idea to bang the same person for the next ’80 years’ and that one should ‘break it up a little bit’ by not marrying but dating ‘someone for five years and another person for another five years’. I have to say, I totally agree with everything she’s saying in the quote below. Everything. I’m lucky, I don’t have a baby-crazy family, nor does Mama Grindhouse put a pistol to my temple every time I attend a family dinner to ask ‘Why ain’t you made me no BABIES?’. Thank heavens. I don’t effing want any babies, not ever, I don’t think. Nor do I want to be stuck with some a**hole for the next half-a-century who’ll have worn down my last nerve well before that. So, that said, here’s what Diaz AND I think about certain bull***t marriages, and relationships, carried out for the sake of social confirmity/ expectaions of where a woman is supposed to be at a certain stage of life.
“I think the big misconception in our society is that we’re supposed to meet the one when we’re 18 and we’re supposed to get married to them and love them for the rest of our lives. Bulls**t. Who would want to be with the same person for 80 years?” Diaz said. “Why not break it up a little bit? I think people get freaked out about getting married and spending 20 or 30 years sleeping with the same person but if that’s the case, don’t do it. Have someone for five years and another person for another five years.
