Brittany Murphy Foundation is Not a Charity

The Brittany Murphy Foundation is, as of Friday at the least, a charity in name alone. This will come as no shock to the many, many detractors of Simon Monjack; Widower Monjack being one of the two who set up the foundation and website, along with Brittany Murphy’s mother Sharon Murphy. TMZ did some digging, and according to state and federal records no such charity exists.

The foundation’s site has been soliciting funds since Jan., claiming they were dedicated to arts education for kids. However The Brittany Murphy Foundation isn’t registered as a charity with the IRS or California, as required by law.

The California Secretary of State’s office told TMZ there are no records for The Brittany Murphy Foundation. The state Attorney General’s office also has no record of the organization as a nonprofit group and the IRS says the foundation has not filed for a non-profit license. [TMZ]

If a non-charity solicits money they have to disclose the fact that they are not registered as a non-profit. As of Friday February 12, 2010, there was no disclaimer on the website. Furthermore, an hour after TMZ called for a comment on the findings, the website was magically down for maintenance.

Neither the foundation spokeswoman at Larkin Rivero Management, where donations were directed, nor Monjack would make a comment on the issue.
