A decade ago, the tabloids filled a slow news day with the easy conjecture that Britney Spears would probably never get over the first love on whom she’s alleged to have cheated. Which Justin Timberlake sort of confirmed by writing an entire album whining about a cheating girlfriend who broke his trust and whom he wouldn’t get over until he found himself under Jessica Biel’s Love Shelf. And now the same tabloids are belatedly saying ‘I told you so!’ Because a Spears family lawyer told a court full of people on Timberlake’s wedding day that Spears ‘changed’ and ‘became depressed’ after the split in 2003. Jamie Spears’ attorney, Leon Gladstone, told jurors in his opening statement Friday: ‘[Britney and Justin] had a big relationship and it ended painfully. In 2003, her parents noticed that she had changed over the breakup of her and Justin and noticed she was depressed… [Britney] went to Vegas and got married to a childhood friend for 55 hours and they realized that she was becoming distant with her parents and become concerned she was using illegal substances.’ Yeah, we know. Spears may or may not be the Face of Meth, as alleged by Sam Lutfi, but her parents admit she’s been using drugs for years which have exacerbated her mental health issues.
