Wentworth Miller came out as 41-years-old (BRAND NEW INFORMATION) a few weeks ago with an announcement for GLAAD that also outed himself as gay (NOT NEW INFORMATION). There had been rumours for over a decade. Moreover, his relationships with men were an open secret. But in response to an invitation to a Russian film festival, he chose to come out of the closet altogether. He’s not done yet, I guess, because he gave a speech at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Seattle Saturday night. In the speech, Miller talks about how he was so confused about his sexuality he tried to commit suicide, more than once, starting at the age 15. It wasn’t a cry for help, he says, ‘you only cry for help if there is help to cry for.’ He continues, he wanted to be a role model ‘to be the someone else, that no one was to me.’ Previously, he would lie outright when asked about his sexuality. For example, in 2007, he told InStyle Magazine: ‘I’m not gay, but that rumor can’t be killed. I’d like to have a girlfriend and a family. But I haven’t met the right one yet. Until then I’m focusing on my job. I had to wait so long for this chance I savor every second on set even if it means 14 hours of shooting a day.’ Also, and I have no idea whether this was him, but 20 days before he came out, there was an anonymous Reddit.com confession about a closeted actor with a beard girlfriend who was told coming out would end his career.
