Specs-wearing PAs no longer have a frumpy, multi-coloured idol to look up to. The fat cats at ABC have decided to make Betty and co. walk the proverbial plank. Can’t say I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner, but it’s almost a shame as the show has its moments. The show would manage to slip a few funnies in-between shots of all the fabulous clothes, just like I slip downers into my own drinks to level me out. The show will end in its fourth season; the best jokes ended in the middle of season two, so the rest of the show is catching up.
Steve McPherson, ABC head, spoke about the show: “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

nopt surprised. it barely survied the chopping block last year (at the expense of Pushing Daisies)
still, i’ve heard a few folks saying thsat making betty un-ugly has killed what little life this show had left
never watched it, so i can’t say
I forgot about that, and though I liked it I guess I also forgot about Pushing Daisies. Sucks for them both.
Well the idea that Betty would eventually transform like the ugly duckling into a beautiful swan was known from the beginning. That is the premise of the original Colombian novela this was based on (which I watched with my mom in Spanish…it became an international phenomenon).
The demise of this show has more to do with ABC playing the ratings roulette. The show was a hit so they kept shuffling it to low-rated nights in the hopes that its original legions of devoted viewers would follow. It’s a ploy to boost advertising revenue on slow nights.
This only confuses and irritates loyal fans and they vote their frustration with their remote controls when their favorite shows suddenly disappear from their normal routines.
At the end of the day, all television shows in the U.S. are commodities used to sell other commodities. It’s all about money.
Still, I will miss the gay kid.
The cast have their moments, but your point about clueless execs is of course a very valid one. The show had the potential to thrive as any other. I agree, as you say, that it was run into the ground.
